What color eyes can dogs have?

ree

We've all seen Siberian Huskies with their piercing blue eyes, or friendly Labrador Retrievers with big, brown eyes. But did you know that dogs have 5 eye colors? Do you know what eye color is rare in dogs? The most common?

1: Brown

If you've ever owned or saw a dog, chances are high that he had brown eyes. That's because most dogs have brown eyes as brown is the most common color. This elderly Golden Retriever wears brown eyes nicely, don't you think?

2: Blue

When you think of blue-eyed dogs, the dog that comes first to many minds is the Siberian Husky. Blue is the second most-common eye color. Did you know that many other dog breeds also have blue eyes besides Siberian Huskies? Great Danes, Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, Cardigan Welsh Corgi's, American Pit Bull Terriers and many others are shown to have blue eyes.

3: Amber

Amber is a rare color, but common in Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Amber is described as an orange-yellow hybrid.

4: Hazel

ree

Like humans, dogs can have hazel eyes. Hazel is a color that has brown, green and gold mixed in. This Barbet is giving you the side-eye with his hazel eyes.

5: Green

ree

Green is the rarest eye color for dogs, with only a few breeds with the color naturally. The American Pit Bull Terrier is one of them.

Heterochromia

Heterochromia is where a dog has two different colored eyes. For example, a Border Collie may have a brown eye and a blue eye. Heterochromia is caused by a genetic mutation passed by your parents. Heterochromia doesn't cause any long-term dangers.

Normal Heterochromia

Here, this Siberian Husky has a brown left eye and a blue right eye. This is caused by heterochromia.

Segmental Heterochromia

Segmental Heterochromia is where a dog has two colors in a single eye, as shown with this Border Collie. He has a blue eye with brown patches and a brown right eye.

Did you know that humans have six eye colors, making them having one more than dogs? Humans can have gray eyes, whereas dogs can not. However, many people mistake very light blue eyes as gray, such as the eyes of a weimaraner. Happy reading, and of course, Canine Good.
