It's a known fact that dogs come in all shapes in sizes, but a little-known fact is that some breeds of dogs weigh more than the average adult man! Keep reading to discover the heaviest breeds of dogs on the planet.




#10. Central Asian Shepherd Dog


Central Asian Shepherd Dogs originated from Russia and the Soviet Union, mostly to protect herds of sheep and goats from predators. These massive dogs can weigh anywhere from 88-170 pounds, with females getting slightly smaller. These dogs are most known for their booming bark that can scare away any daring predator or thief.






#9: Boerboel



The Boerboel comes from South Africa, where it is used to guard homesteads and property. These dogs can weigh 120-170 pounds. They are extremely muscular dogs that need some training, because these dogs can easily knock over a small child, or even an adult.




#8: Irish Wolfhound




Irish Wolfhounds are one of the heaviest breeds of dogs, and they also happen to be the tallest breed of dog, standing over 7 feet tall on hind legs! They were bred in Ireland to hunt wolves, and to hunt a large animal, they need to be a large dog. Luckily, Irish Wolfhounds can weigh 115-180 pounds, as much as the average wolf. But don't let their size fool you; Irish Wolfhounds are gentle and mean no harm.



#7: Tibetan Mastiff



Tibetan Mastiffs were bred in Tibet, to guard the nomads of Tibet. They can weigh 120-180 pounds, making them a strong and heavy guard dog that no one will mess with. Tibetan Mastiffs also happen to be one of the most expensive breeds of dogs, with a red colored dog selling at over 1 million dollars!




#6: Saint Bernard


Saint Bernard's are perhaps the best known 'big' dogs. They were bred in the Swiss Alps that go through Italy and Switzerland, to rescue people. They can weigh 120-180 pounds, making them able to carry almost their body weight. Fun fact: It is said that the barrels these dogs wore around their necks contained brandy, to keep people warm as they were carried down the mountain.



#5: Fila Brasileiro



Fila Brasiero's were bred in Brazil to protect cattle and to sometimes track large game. These are the best known Brazilian dog, mostly known for their size and power. They can weigh 130-180 pounds. They also happen to have a reputation were they are aggressive to people and are known to attack. However, with careful training, the Fila can become a loyal but protective dog.




#4: Great Dane



Known for being one of the worlds tallest dogs, the Great Dane was bred in Germany to track boar and to protect homes. These gentle giants can weigh 99-200 pounds! But like the Irish Wolfhound, these dogs are gentle and mean no harm. Fun fact: Great Danes were bred by breeding mastiffs with Irish Wolfhounds, making their giant stance and heavy weight.











#3: Pyrenean Mastiff


The Pyrenean Mastiff was bred in the Aragon region of Spain, where it was used to protect herds of sheep from predators. These dogs can weigh a whopping 130-200 pounds, weighing almost as much as a North American mountain lion!







#2: Caucasian Shepherd Dog



The Caucasian Shepherd Dog was bred in the Caucasus Mountains to protect flocks of sheep from wolves and bears. To do this, these dogs can weigh 130-200 pounds, making them very powerful dogs.









#1: English Mastiff



The English Mastiff tops of this list by weighing 180-230 pounds! These dogs were bred to protect homesteads and property in England, and just their sheer size alone was enough to drive away intruders.
