Have you ever turned to the internet to decide what breed of dog was perfect for you? Did you ever complete one of the silly surveys and get about ten different breeds for you to choose from? Have you wondered if it was accurate or was it just guessing? Well, I went though and completed six different quizzes and got many different results. Lets look, shall we?
My lifestyle as a High School student
Living space: House with medium yard with little neighbors
Currently own dogs, cats, small animals
Don’t have kids under 10 (except for brother but he doesn’t count)
Bark tolerance is in the middle
Shedding doesn’t bother me
Looking for a dog that is cuddly and loves people and attention
About an hour of exercise a day will suit me and the dog
Dog will be alone for about 5-8 hours a day due to school
Size of dog is medium-extra large (no small dogs)
I like grooming so that won’t be an issue either
I can put a moderate amount of time into training after school
Want a dog that is protective of their family but friendly with family as well
Drooling bothers me very little
Want a dog with a low prey drive as we have small animals and cats
1. AKC Dog Breed Selector: What Breed is Right for me? https://www.akc.org/dog-breed-selector/
Top breeds for me were the:
Labrador Retriever
Golden Retriever
German Shorthaired Pointer
Doberman Pinscher
Brittany
Border Collie
Weimaraner
German Wirehaired Pointer
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
Irish Setter
Overall: I noticed that most of the dogs listed are Sporting dogs. The Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shorthaired Pointer, Brittany, Weimaraner, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon and the Irish Setter are all Sporting breeds. The quiz was very simple and easy to understand. And I even took it twice and got the same #1 dog.
2: Pedigree- Breed Match
https://www.pedigree.com/getting-a-new-dog/breed-match
Top breeds for me were the:
Brussels Griffon
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Dandie Dinmont Terrier
English Toy Spaniel
Havanese
Japanese Chin
Pekinese
Sealyham Terrier
Overall: This quiz was also simple to take and had a nice design. However, I noticed that all of the dogs I got are small dogs and the heaviest on here is the Sealyham Terrier at 18-20 pounds. I specifically stated I didn't want a small dog because we have large dogs and many people at my house and the dog will get stepped on. And this list only gives you eight breeds to choose from.
3: Dogtime Dog Breed Selector and Puppy Finder https://dogtime.com/quiz/dog-breed-selector
Top breeds for me were the:
Goldador
Labradoodle
Otterhound
Catahoula Leopard Dog
Broholmer
Bordoodle
Golden Retriever-Corgi
Pyredoodle
Bedlington Terrier
Overall: To start with, there are only four purebred dogs on the list which are the Bedlington Terrier, Otterhound, Broholmer and the Catahoula Leopard Dog. No hating, I just thought that it was cool that Dogtime included mixed breed dogs. However, a problem I did have was about the questions. One of the questions states " How do you react when another driver cuts you off while you are on the highway?" What does that have to do with dogs? Is the dog driving?
4: Iams Dog Breed Selector https://www.iams.com/dog-breed-selector
Top breeds for me were the:
Boerboel
Afghan Hound
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
Berger Picard (Picardy Shepherd)
Overall: This quiz was very easy to follow and I enjoyed taking it. It only gave me four breeds to choose from, however. And most of the pictures of the dog had the dog playing in mud instead of just a normal picture which I would think would confuse people.
5: Orvis Dog Breed Selector https://www.orvis.com/dog-breed-selector.html
Top breeds for me were the:
Bouvier Des Flandres
Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
Dalmatian
Basset Hound
Bernese Mountain Dog
Flat Coated Retriever
Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Vizsla
Newfoundland
Boxer
Overall: Like a lot of these quizzes, this one was easy to take and I enjoyed the layout. It has mostly the same questions as the other quizzes.
6: What dog should I get? Purina https://www.purina.com/dogs/dog-breed-selector
Top dogs for me were the:
1. Brussels Griffon
2. Affenpinscher
3. Bearded Collie
4. Clumber Spaniel
5. Chug (chihuahua/pug mix)
6. Bolognese
7. Borzoi
8. Boston Terrier
9. French Bulldog
10. Old English Sheepdog
Overall: Even though I hate Purina's products, this quiz was very good! However, I'm not going to trust it because this company can barely make a good dog diet. This company has more than six brands and none of them are good.
7. Rover: Dog Breed Selector https://www.rover.com/blog/dog-breed-selector/
Top breeds for me were the:
English Bulldog
Labradoodle
Standard Poodle
Overall; Truthfully, this is an okay quiz. But I don't like how they give you three breeds instead of ten like most of the others. And like Purina, I don't trust this company simply because I don't want a complete stranger to take care of my beloved dogs.
Breeds for me (apparently)
. 1. Wirehaired Pointing Griffon (listed three times)
2. Labradoodle (listed two times)
3. Affenpinscher (listed two times)
If I had to choose, I would choose the AKC website as my go-to dog breed selector. It had an easy-to-read quiz, a fitting design, and reasons why the breed is right for you. Happy reading! And of course, Canine Good! P.S. I hate you Purina
